It's a sure sign that it's playoff time in college hockey when you hear the phrase "best of three" more often than at a rock, paper, scissors competition.

As we prepare for these best-of-three series, we glance ahead to when it's best for 60-plus minutes: the NCAA Tournament. For that, we turn to the INCH 4x4, which projects what we think the field might look like once the season ends.

Here's how the Inside College Hockey editors and staff rank the nation's top teams (along with movement since last week and a note for each team).

No. Team

Of Note
1. Cornell Clarkson's return to Lynah may rekindle bad memories from last year, but at least the visitors are tired – all three of the Knights' games vs. Union went to overtime.
22-4-3 (18-2-2 ECACHL). LAST WEEK: Off. THIS WEEK: vs. Clarkson (best of three).
2. Colorado College Unfortunately for the Tigers, the WCHA tiebreaker for the top seed doesn't come down to who skated the MacNaughton Cup first.
26-7-3 (19-7-2 WCHA). LAST WEEK: W vs. Denver, 3-0; L at Denver, 5-0. THIS WEEK: vs. St. Cloud State (best of three).
3. Denver So CC beats DU at home Thursday and enjoys a MacNaughton Cup celebration. Then the Pioneers win Friday's rematch in Denver and do the same with said Cup. This wasn't one of those 'Survivor'-type pre-arranged deals, was it?
24-9-2 (19-7-2 WCHA). LAST WEEK: L at Colorado College, 3-0; W vs. Colorado College, 5-0. THIS WEEK: vs. Michigan Tech (best of three).
4. Boston College "We have a team expression: 'Jump in the wheelbarrel,' " Jerry York told the Herald Saturday. We have no idea what that means, but whatever works, Jerry.
21-6-7 (14-3-7 Hockey East). LAST WEEK: W vs. Maine, 4-3; T vs. Maine, 2-2 ot. THIS WEEK: vs. Massachusetts (best of three).
5. Michigan The Wolverines' team expression? Don't lose...and they haven't since Jan. 28. The CCHA regular-season champs enter the postseason with a nine-game (7-0-2) unbeaten streak.
26-7-3 (23-3-2 CCHA). LAST WEEK: W at Bowling Green, 4-1; W vs. Bowling Green, 5-4. THIS WEEK: vs. Notre Dame (best of three).
6. Ohio State Nearly 12,000 fans saluted the Buckeyes' three-member senior class Saturday, the first in OSU history to win 20-plus games in each of their four seasons in Columbus.
24-8-4 (21-5-2 CCHA). LAST WEEK: W at Miami, 3-1; T vs. Miami, 2-2 ot. THIS WEEK: vs. Ferris State (best of three).
7. Minnesota 2 Gone are the Gophers who relied on their first line early in the season. Nine players accounted for their nine goals this weekend.
24-12-1 (17-10-1 WCHA). LAST WEEK: W at Michigan tech, 4-2; W at Michigan Tech, 5-0. THIS WEEK: vs. Minnesota State (best of three).
8. New Hampshire 1 The Wildcats couldn't hold their lead in the Hockey East standings because they couldn't get a lead – their last four opponents have scored first.

18-8-3 (15-5-2 ECACHL). LAST WEEK: Off. THIS WEEK: vs. St. Lawrence (best of three).
10. Wisconsin 2 Bad omen no. 1 – Wisconsin is 1-5-3 in their last nine games. Bad omen no. 2 – Alaska Anchorage, last year's Badger-killers, hopes to repeat the feat at the Dane County Coliseum this weekend.
21-11-4 (16-9-3 WCHA). LAST WEEK: T at Minnesota Duluth, 2-2 ot; L at Minnesota Duluth, 4-3. THIS WEEK: vs. Alaska Anchorage (best of three).
