Hunwick, Vicari Added to U.S. National Junior Team

Michigan State goaltender Dominic Vicari and Michigan defenseman Matt Hunwick have been added to the U.S. National Junior Team, replacing Maine’s Jimmy Howard and Harvard’s Dylan Reese, both of whom will both be forced to miss the World Junior Championship due to injuries.

Howard suffered a sprained knee and is out for two-to-four weeks, forcing him to miss at least the Everblades College Classic (which he would have missed while in Finland with the U.S. team anyway). He could conceivably return for the Black Bears’ Jan. 4 game against Vermont.

Howard ranks third in the nation with a 1.69 goals-against average. Maine is perhaps uniquely prepared to cope with his loss; the Black Bears’ other goaltender, Frank Doyle, ranks seventh in the nation in GAA (1.88).

Reese, who has no points in six games with Harvard, was forced to withdraw from the team due to an injury that has kept him out of the last six games for Harvard.

Vicari and Hunwick will both miss the Great Lakes Invitational, and each joins teammates on the roster (David Booth and Corey Potter from Michigan State; Alvaro Montoya from Michigan). Vicari has a 5-6-0 record with MSU this season with a 2.36 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. Hunwick has four assists in 18 games for the Wolverines.

The current U.S. National Junior Team roster and the U.S. team’s schedule is listed below.
