ROBERT MORRIS 4, AIR FORCE 3

Trailing 3-0 less than 22 minutes into its College Hockey America tournament quarterfinal game against Air Force, it appeared Robert Morris' season would end with a loss to a team it swept in Colorado Springs two weeks ago.

Appearances, however, can be deceiving.

The fourth-seeded Colonials (12-19-3) scored four unanswered goals – the last coming from sophomore forward Tom Biondich with 4:09 remaining in the third period – to beat the fifth-seeded Falcons (11-20-1), 4-3, at Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Detroit Friday.

“We were a desparate team,” Robert Morris coach Derek Schooley said. “We wanted to win the second period and let the chips fall where they may in the third period.”

The game started inauspiciously for the Colonials when forward Sean Berkstresser was hit with a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for checking from behind, and things got worse from there. Though RMU would kill the major penalty, Air Force's Brooks Turnquist picked up a power-play goal midway through the first period. Josh Print doubled the Falcon lead with 1:44 left in the opening period, and Theo Zacour pushed the advantage to three goals 1:50 into the second period.

RMU answered with a pair of goals prior to the second intermission – one by Kurt Wright, one by Logan Bittle – to trim the Falcons' edge to 3-2. Bittle tied the score with 5:11 left in the third period, and Biondich netted the winner 62 seconds later.

Christian Boucher made 27 saves for Robert Morris, which plays top-seed and conference regular-season champion Niagara in one semifinal match Saturday. Peter Foster stopped 15 shots for Air Force.

ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE 3, WAYNE STATE 1

Brett McConnahachie scored two goals and added an assist as third-seeded Alabama-Huntsville defeated sixth-seed Wayne State, 3-1, in the second of two CHA quarterfinal matches in Detroit Friday.

McConnachie's first goal of the night at the 12:26 mark of the second period came just 49 seconds after the Warriors' Tylor Michel scored his first goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. Bruce Mulherin, the Chargers' leading point-getter, opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the season a little more than six minutes into the second on an assist from McConnachie.

Less than three minutes into the third period, McConnachie, a junior wing from Ajax, Ontario, added an insurance goal on assists from defensemen Jeff Winchester and Jeremy Schreiber.

CHA Co-Player of the Year Scott Munroe made 45 saves for the Chargers (19-12-2), who meet second-seed Bemidji State in tomorrow's semifinal round. Will Hooper stopped 24 shots for Wayne State (6-23-6).
