Toomey's 12 goals ranked second for Mercyhurst last
season.
Key Statistics: Toomey
matched his point production from his sophomore season,
only reversing his goal (12) and assist (9) totals as
a junior. He ranked second on the team in goals and
tied for fifth in points. His 92 shots on goal ranked
second on the team, and he raised his shot percentage
from nine to 13 percent. His seven power-play goals
all came in the last two seasons. Toomey went from a
plus-four as a sophomore to a minus-four last season,
not a shock given the hard-luck Lakers’ plunge
in the standings.
What He Does: Toomey
is one of the fastest skaters in all of Atlantic Hockey,
and his speed not only helps set up numerous scoring
opportunities but prevents them on the defensive side.
Toomey sees the ice very well, and his understanding
of the game has made him an asset on the penalty kill.
The Bigger Picture: Mercyhurst has
lost a ton of talent over the past two seasons, including
last season’s top point producers Scott Champagne
(141 in his career) and Kyle Gourgon (91). Laker head
coach Rick Gotkin needs Toomey to raise his point production.
With Gourgon graduating, Gotkin is going to move Toomey
to wing and pair him with high-scoring center Ben Cottreau
– moving Dave Borrelli to wing was Gotkin’s
last experiment and that worked pretty well.
Head coach Rick Gotkin on Toomey:
"Ryan is an absolutely great young man. The biggest
thing to me that jumps out is he just seems to get better
year after year. With that being said, we look forward
to this year being his best.”
