Key Statistics: As a
freshman, Campbell scored 6 goals and added 16 assists
for 22 points, finishing as Western Michigan's second-leading
scorer. Having played in all 38 games, Campbell did
exceptionally well staying out of the penalty box and
in the action, racking up a mere 10 penalty minutes
all season long.
What He Does: Campbell
is an intelligent player, known for great hockey sense
and an ability to score under pressure. He got off to
a strong start last season, notching 3 points in the
Broncos' season-opening series against Bentley –
including a Saturday-night game-winner. As the coaching
staff at Western Michigan pushes him to take more shots,
his offensive output should jump significantly this
year.
The Bigger Picture: In
the eyes of head coach Jim Culhane, jumping from Ontario's
Junior B ranks to the CCHA is one of the biggest jumps
a young hockey player will make. Having played junior
hockey for his hometown Strathroy Rockets, last season
was the first time Campbell was away from home and Culhane
noted that the change induced an increased maturity
both on and off the ice that will earn Campbell an increased
opportunity to play with top offensive lines and some
minutes on the power play.
Western Michigan Head Coach Jim
Culhane on Campbell: "He has good offensive
instincts, good vision, and a good shot. We're continuing
to work with him and help him concentrate on taking
more shots. To be a goal scorer, you have to be a little
bit selfish sometimes, so I'd like to see him shoot
the puck."
