Key Statistics: Davis
has been extremely consistent through the course of
his career, posting lines of 9-9—18 in 36 games
as a freshman, 8-11—19 in 35 games as a sophomore
and 6-17—23 in 36 games last year.
What He Does: He’s
a really fast, hard-skating, tough forward with a knack
around the net, and he has always been a positive presence
in the locker room. While Davis has faced a multitude
of injuries throughout his tenure in Amherst, his teammates
can always count on him suiting up on game day. UMass
coach Don Cahoon called Davis’s leadership “exemplary”
and also called him “as tough a player as we have.”
The Bigger Picture: Davis
headlined a freshman class that began to slightly swing
the type of recruits Cahoon has drawn to UMass. Davis
and teammates such as Cory Quirk and Will Ortiz have
transformed the Minutemen into one of the faster squads
in Hockey East. While Davis’s points have increased
in each of his three seasons, he hasn’t had the
breakout year many have been looking for. His injuries
are the reason for that, and a healthy campaign in 2008-09
would make him one of the more feared scorers in the
league.
UMass coach Don Cahoon on Davis:
“I don’t want to put a lot of pressure
on him numbers-wise. The other things he does —
skating hard, finishing checks, playing tough —
are the things we need him to do for us to be successful.
I know he can score, and he’ll score big goals
for us throughout the year.”
