Key Statistics: Helfrich
made an immediate impact on Rensselaer as a freshman,
leading the team in scoring with nine goals and 29 points.
He played in all 38 games for the Engineers.
What He Does: The Calgary
native arrived on the RPI campus as a highly-touted
scorer and delivered what was expected from him in his
rookie campaign. He has the ability to score, but his
vision is his best asset and he excels as a set-up man
on the team's top line.
The Bigger Picture: When
Seth Appert took over as Rensselaer's head coach, he
and assistants Jim Montgomery and Shawn Kurulak set
out to increase the team's overall talent level. Landing
players like Helfrich in the early going set the tone
for future classes, and the Engineers are excited about
the next two groups of players coming in. Helfrich will
be looked upon to continue his production and also to
mentor the team's younger players.
Rensselaer head coach Seth Appert
on Helfrich's future: "We expect him to
be an elite forward in the league, and also to be a
leader. There's another good recruiting class behind
him. He can be an offensive leader on the ice and a
key component in getting our team back to the upper
tier of ECAC Hockey."
