Key Statistics: The only
defenseman in Division I hockey to lead his team in
scoring, the 5-foot-9 Roshko did it without scoring
a single goal. He was especially competitive in conference
games with 11 of his 17 assists and all but four of
his 28 penalty minutes against CHA foes.
What He Does: The coaching
staff began pairing the sophomore with junior Scott
Kalinchuk at Thanksgiving and they stayed together for
all but a few games from that point on. In that time
the Chargers earned all but one of their wins and three
of four ties. The duo ate up minutes in all situations
while trying to provide a calming influence on their
two goaltenders, who entered the season with a combined
eight games of experience.
The Bigger Picture: The
coaching staff is hoping that Roshko doesn’t repeat
as team scoring champ, but they do hope he continues
his development which led from a three-goal, eight-assist
freshman season to his 17 points last year. Twenty-plus
points is well within reach, especially with more help
from the 10 rookie forwards who saw action last season
now having a year behind them.
Alabama-Huntsville head coach
Danton Cole on Roshko: "Brandon played
well and made great strides last season. This was an
important summer for him because he knows he needs to
get bigger and stronger to log the minutes we need.
He is one of our most experienced defenseman, so we’ll
probably change up this year and pair him with one of
the younger defensemen; at least that’s where
we’re leaning right now."
