Go-To Guys: Spencer Penrose Award
Last year at
this time, folks around Ewigleben Ice Arena were probably addressing
Ferris State head coach Bob Daniels as "Mr. Penrose."
This week, as Inside College Hockey's Go-To Guys takes a look at
the 2003-04 coach of the year honors for the first time, the field
is a little more muddled.
Inside College
Hockey editors and staff, in consultation with coaches and media
from around the country, compiled this list of how we would vote
for the Spencer Penrose Award today – not necessarily how
we think the races will turn out. And stay tuned, because a lot
can change each weekend; we'll continue our looks at the Penrose,
and other honors, as the season progresses.

Scott Sandelin
Minnesota Duluth |
Lots
of people had the Bulldogs pegged as a potential "surprise"
team in 2003-04. But they were thinking top four in the conference,
not top four in the nation.

Stan Moore
Colgate |
He
said at the beginning of the year that he felt like he was borrowing
Dad's car for the prom, and wanted to return it with a full
tank of gas and no dents. Expect a raise in your allowance,
Stan, and maybe even a later curfew.

3.
Mike Eaves
Wisconsin |
Few teams
rely on youth as much as the Badgers, but second-year coach
Eaves led them on a 14-game unbeaten streak. They should get
home ice in the WCHA.

4.
Enrico Blasi
Miami |
By
seamlessly blending veterans (Edwardson, Kompon, Hogeboom) and
rookies (Christie, Guerin, Crawford-West), Blasi has the RedHawks
poised for their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997.

Dan Fridgen

How does
a team that went 12-25-3 one year earlier chase a league title
with almost the exact same lineup? We'd like to think the man
behind the bench has something to do with it.
