NCAA
Team
Who
They Picked
Mercyhurst
Marvin Degon, D, Massachusetts
The
Reasoning: Having already added a forward, the Lakers
go defensive this round. The silky-smooth Degon will help
the Lakers skating ability, and he's familiar with Boston
College and possible second-round foe BU. First Pick: Colin Murphy, F, Michigan Tech
Bemidji
State
David
Backes, F, Minnesota State, Mankato
The
Reasoning: A point-a-game scorer during his first
two years with the Mavericks, Backes is a big guy who can
play either center or wing. And given his experience with
Mankato, he knows how to score against Denver. First Pick: Evan Schwabe, F, Minnesota Duluth
Colgate
Brent
Walton, F, Western Michigan
The
Reasoning: With offense still a need, the Raiders
take the best scorer available in Walton (50 points in 37
games). He can also contribute on the power play and penalty
kill. First Pick: Lee Stempniak, F, Dartmouth
Maine
Stephen
Werner, F, Massachusetts
The
Reasoning: The big ice shouldn't phase the Black
Bears, one of the best skating teams in the field. Werner's
skating ability will fit right in, and his offensive production
should rise with a better supporting cast than he had with
the Minutemen. First Pick: Ben Walter, F, UMass Lowell
Wisconsin
Drew
Miller, F, Michigan State
The
Reasoning: Miller blossomed into quite a scorer for
Michigan State this season, and gets goals at opportune times.
He brings grit, experience, determination and a healthy distaste
for the Badgers' first-round opponent. First Pick: Andy Greene, D, Miami
Ohio
State
Tim
Judy, D, Northeastern
The
Reasoning: The Buckeyes have a talented, but green,
defensive corps, with no seniors and Nate Guenin the only
junior. Judy, 24 years old and married, is a solid blueliner
who would provide a veteran's steady influence. First Pick: Jim Slater,
F, Michigan State
Boston
University
Tim
Stapleton, F, Minnesota Duluth
The
Reasoning: Either Stapleton or teammate Marco Peluso
would be a good pick here, but we'll go with the former because
of his better track record (122 career points to Peluso's
88). He's been through the battles in the WCHA and the NCAA
Tournament. First Pick: Elias Godoy, F, UMass Lowell
Harvard
Mike
Ouellette, F, Dartmouth
The
Reasoning: The Crimson can add a big-time scorer
and big-game player, so they grab Ouellette. He knows something
about beating UNH, too, with 1-3=4 in a comeback win earlier
this year. First Pick: Chris Conner, F, Michigan Tech
New
Hampshire
Scott
Mifsud, F, Vermont
The
Reasoning: The Wildcats are stunned to have seen
so many teams pass on the Catamounts' leading scorer, and
first-round pick Sifers – always a team guy –
makes sure Mifsud doesn't slip another spot. First Pick: Jaime Sifers, D, Vermont
North
Dakota
Reid
Cashman, D, Quinnipiac
The
Reasoning: The Sioux add more offensive punch, but
this time it's in the form of the nation's top-scoring defenseman
and Hobey Baker Award finalist. First Pick: Jeff Legue, F, Ferris State
Michigan
Jared
Sylvestre, F, Alaska-Fairbanks
The
Reasoning: With their defenseman in tow, the Wolverines
choose to add a gritty, hard-working, two-way forward in the
mold of Jed Ortmeyer. Hence Sylvestre, who's also a clutch
scorer (4 GWGs). First Pick: Nathan Oystrick, D, Northern
Michigan
Cornell
Nick
Johnson, F, Dartmouth
The
Reasoning: What team wouldn't want a big, strong
forward with scoring skills around the net? None, but it's
especially fitting for Cornell, who takes Johnson, a rookie
star in the ECACHL. First Pick: Bryan Schmidt, D, Merrimack
Minnesota
Keni
Gibson, G, Northeastern
The
Reasoning: The Gophers could use some insurance in
goal, and Gibson was a reliable workhorse for the Huskies
this season. He also has proven himself in big games, nearly
leading Northeastern to a Beanpot title. First Pick: Cleve Kinley, D, UMass Lowell
Colorado
College
Colton
Fretter, F, Michigan State
The
Reasoning: The Tigers are in 'best player available'
mode here. Fretter's 10 power-play goals add to an already
potent unit, and his six game-winners are a nice luxury, too. First Pick: Jason Guerriero, F, Northeastern
Denver
Wes
O'Neill, D, Notre Dame
The
Reasoning: The Pioneers, like the Tigers, have no
real need to fill, but the thought of Carle, Skinner and O'Neill
on the blue line is pretty tough to pass up. First Pick: Marty Guerin, F, Miami
Boston
College
Mike
Morris, F, Northeastern
The
Reasoning: Like their first-round pick, the Eagles
grab a forward with the ability to finish and a bit of size.
He had 13 goals in the season's last 18 games. First Pick: Scott Parse, F, Nebraska-Omaha
