Welcome to Inside College Hockey's latest weekly feature, Go-To Guys, in which we take a look at the candidates for major college hockey awards.

This week we look at the national coach of the year award: The Spencer Penrose Award.

Inside College Hockey editors and staff, in consultation with coaches and media from around the country, compiled this list of how we would vote today – not necessarily how we think the race will turn out. And stay tuned, because a lot can change each weekend.

THE SPENCER PENROSE AWARD – Jan. 21, 2003
1. Don Cahoon
Massachusetts
If waking a sleeping giant isn’t enough to convince you that he’s at the top of this list, take a look at Princeton’s record. The guy can coach.
13-10-1 (7-8-0 Hockey East)
2. Bob Daniels
Ferris State
He does a great coaching job year after year in the relative seclusion of Big Rapids. This could be the year the Bulldogs make waves nationally.
17-6-1 (12-3-1 CCHA)
3. Scott Owens
Colorado College
Seamlessly blended heralded freshmen and unproven returnees with battle-tested veterans to produce one of the nation's best teams. Everyone contributes.
17-2-5 (10-1-5 WCHA)
4. Tim Whitehead
Maine
Since its inception in 1951, there has never been a repeat winner of the Penrose. With Maine near the top again, he deserves consideration.
19-2-3 (9-1-2 Hockey East)
5. Troy Jutting
Minnesota State, Mankato
High-flying Grant Stevenson and Shane Joseph have Jutting's Mavericks just four points out of first in the WCHA.
10-7-7 (8-5-5 WCHA)
Second unit Chris Serino (Merrimack), Bob Gaudet (Dartmouth), Doug Ross (Alabama-Huntsville), Ryan Soderquist (Bentley), Dean Blais (North Dakota)
Third unit Roger Grillo (Brown), Scott Sandelin (Minnesota-Duluth), John Markell (Ohio State), Rick Gotkin (Mercyhurst), Tim Taylor (Yale)
Could be making a late run Rick Comley (Michigan State)

Feedback

It's literally incredible that you could list sixteen coaches who should be considered for the Spencer Penrose Award without including Cornell's Mike Schafer.

Are you paying attention to what's happening this season?

– Al DeFlorio

How could you put Bob Gaudet, Roger Grillo, and Tim Taylor, from the ECAC, on the list and not Mike Schafer? Just what are those coaches doing that Coach Schafer is not?

– Jim Hyla

Were your Spencer Penrose Award candidates a joke? I didn't realize that it
was April Fool's Day already. Of course, come April Fool's Day, Cornell
University will be poised to make a run at the national championship and
you'll feel terribly silly for leaving Mike Schafer's name off your list.
All he's done is taken one of the very few teams in the nation that is not
allowed to offer scholarships and coached them to a Top 5 spot nationally.
Get with the picture, or get out of the business.

– Adam J. Simons
