Go-To Guys: The Hobey Baker Award

Every other week in Go-To Guys – Inside College Hockey's look at award candidates in the sport – we examine the biggest individual honor of them all: The Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

Inside College Hockey editors and staff, in consultation with coaches and media from around the country, compiled this list of how we would vote today – not necessarily how we think the race will turn out. And stay tuned, because a lot can change each weekend.

THE HOBEY BAKER AWARD – Jan. 28, 2003
1. Peter Sejna
Colorado College
Better see him now; you'll have to pay NHL ticket prices to catch his act next year.
26 GP, 27-26—53
2. Zach Parise
North Dakota
Relatively quiet since performance at WJC. But when 5-4—9 in 4 GP qualifies as "relatively quiet," you must be pretty good.
22 GP, 18-29—47
3. Ben Eaves
Boston College
Carrying the load since brother, Patrick, was shelved with a fractured vertebrae. Ben is the best – right now – out of a trio of strong Hockey East candidates.
21 GP, 13-20—33
4. Dave LeNeveu
Cornell
Can help his cause tremendously by running the table in the ECAC. It's not out of the question.
14-1-0, 1.13 GAA, .942 save pct.
5. Chris Kunitz
Ferris State
This weekend's series vs. Michigan will make or break his candidacy.
26 GP, 20-28—48
Poised to change on the fly Martin Kariya (Maine), Lanny Gare (New Hampshire)
D-men with a shot Tom Preissing (Colorado College), Paul Martin (Minnesota), Doug Murray (Cornell), Francis Nault (Maine)
Forwards, if they finish with a flourish R.J. Umberger (Ohio State), Dominic Moore (Harvard), Brandon Bochenski (North Dakota), Ryan Malone (St. Cloud State), Shane Joseph (Minnesota State, Mankato), Chris Higgins (Yale)

Feedback

Chris Kunitz leads a team picked to finish 9th in their conference. He leads the CCHA in scoring and is some where in the nation's top three (I didn't check current stats but I think I'm damn close). FSU is still in first place at the end of January. No matter where they finish, its been an unbelieveable year for the Bulldogs. Kunitz is surrounded by the "weakest" supporting cast of any of the others you mentioned. Of course he's the best individual player in college hockey. Peter Sejna? Give me a break!
